National Water Week 2010

National Water Week

National Water Week is an annual awareness week that aims to raise public awareness and improve understanding of water issues in Australia. National Water Week is the only event in Australia that provides a national focus for water issues.

In 2010 National Water Week will take place on 17 - 23 October.

As part of this year’s National Water Week celebrations, Victorian water businesses have again run a poster competition, aligned with the national theme and image.

This competition has been running in Victoria since 1994 and is open to all students in Victorian primary schools. It ensures that water is put in the forefront of children’s minds whilst allowing them to explore the issue on their terms in a creative way.

The competition continues to attract thousands of entries with both regional and state prizes offered. Water businesses promote and coordinate the competition to schools within their area, judge regional winners, organise prizes and presentations, often with local media exposure. State level winners and runners up are then selected from the regional winners.

This year has again been a great success; the number, quality and creativity of posters continue to astound even those that have been involved for many years. The competition is an excellent way of seeing what messages are getting across to our young people.

The continued success of this strongly supported poster competition must be attributed to the efforts of the dedicated Education Officers within the Victorian water businesses. They and their management recognise that the education of Victorian students on water related

issues continues to have an important place in providing long term behavioural and attitudinal changes within the community. Anyone can get involved in National Water Week, with activities and events in your area.
