WaterMAP
In recognition that all water users need to do more to save water, it is now mandatory for all non-residential customers consuming 10 million litres or more of water per year to develop a water management action plan (waterMAP).
A waterMAP requires eligible non-residential water customers across Victoria to:
- Assess their water usage
- Identify inefficiencies and opportunities for water savings
- Prepare an action plan to implement water conservation activities
- Annually report on the implementation of water conservation activities
WaterMAP covers 1,750 customers throughout Victoria, with 1,200 based in Melbourne and 550 based in regional Victoria.
In the 2008/09 year, waterMAP customers across the State saved approximately 5 billion litres of water. Combined with the 10 billion litres of water savings made over 2007/08, waterMAP customers have saved around 15 billion litres of water since the program’s inception in 2007.
The requirement to prepare a waterMAP is set out under the Permanent Water Savings Plans of local water corporations. Penalties apply for non-residential customers who fail to comply.
A brochure outlining further details of the waterMAP program and a handbook containing the information to develop a waterMAP are provided below.
