Pipeline eases water restrictions for Hamilton and surrounds

22 July 2010

Premier John Brumby and Water Minister Tim Holding at the opening of the Hamilton Grampians PipelineWater restrictions in Hamilton, Cavendish, Dunkeld and Tarrington in south-west Victoria will be removed following the completion of the Hamilton-Grampians Pipeline.

From Sunday 1 August, restrictions for these towns will be eased from Stage 2 back to Permanent Water Saving Rules ending more than four years of tough water restrictions.

The 52 kilomtere Hamilton Grampians pipeline will bring up to 2 billion litres of water a year from the Rocklands Reservoir in the Grampians to supply the towns.

The project included the construction of the pipeline and a pumping station at Rocklands Reservoir and the purchase of water savings from Wimmera-Mallee Pipeline.

Premier John Brumby and Water Minister Tim Holding joined Wannon Water and the local community to officially open the pipeline which is a key part of the Victorian Government’s Water Plan.

"We understand how important water security is to the liveability and prosperity of our regional and rural areas and that’s why we are making major investments in new water-saving infrastructure to provide our regional communities with a secure water supply," Mr Brumby said.

"The easing of water restrictions is fantastic news for households and communities that have been doing it tough for a number of years and will provide greater flexibility on how water can be used around the home."

Following today's announcement, every town serviced by Wannon Water is now only subject to Permanent Water Saving Rules.
