Priorities

Establishing regional targets requires regional communities to identify their priorities for river restoration and protection over a set time-period.

These priorities will then guide the action and investment by the community and government in the rivers in their region.

We set priorities for protecting and restoring our rivers, through Regional River Health Strategies, on the basis of:

  • protecting existing high value areas or areas in good condition
  • restoring areas where there is:
    - the highest environmental and community gain for the resources invested
    - real community commitment towards long term improvement of river health
      (Read about this story)

Some areas are not of immediate high priority and will not be restored in the short term.   However, any work required to comply with legal or statutory requirements will be undertaken.

Catchment Management Authorities (CMAs) develop Regional River Health Strategies in consultation with the community and key groups and individuals.
