Area: 13 340 km2 Population: 330 000

The estuaries of the Great Ocean Road region are some of the most diverse in Australia.

A number of these estuaries, in particular Anglesea River, Erskine River, Barham River and Painkalac Creek, come under the pressure of a huge population growth each summer.

By working with the widest range of groups and individuals, the Estuaries Improvement Program will improve water quality, protect water frontages, reduce the number of invasive weeds and give fish better access to our rivers.

Regional River Health Strategy

The Corangamite Regional River Health Strategy was developed by the Corangamite CMA in consultation with their local community and key stakeholders. It is an umbrella strategy that sets priorities and direction for the protection and enhancement of rivers.

The Corangamite Regional River Health Strategy identifies river health related objectives, activities and targets for rivers located within the Moorabool,  Barwon, Corangamite and Otways river basins.

Large Scale River Restoration Project

Great Ocean Road Estuary Restoration

The southerly flowing rivers of the Otway Coast Basin are among the most significant waterways in the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority (CMA) region. Amongst the diversity of coastal rivers are significant numbers of ecologically healthy rivers, threatened fish species and estuaries that are significant in supporting the tourism industry through social activities including recreational fishing, swimming and boating.

The Great Ocean Road Estuary Restoration incorporates a number of activities to alleviate pressure and risks on a number of key estuaries in the region through fishing platform erection, educational signage, hydraulic modelling to inform river mouth opening protocols, riparian frontage enhancement, estuary management planning, stormwater management, sediment control and bank stabilisation.
