Rivers, Streams & Creeks
Victoria’s rivers are the lifeblood of the state.
Around 85,000 kms of streams, rivers and creeks play an essential role in providing Victoria with crucial services such as
- Sustaining people by supplying water for towns, farms and businesses
- Providing places to play relax and connect with nature
- Helping absorb floodwaters and protect against fires
- Contributing to local economies through industries such as boating and tourism
River systems are also diverse and complex ecosystems in their own right, sustaining diverse species of native plants, fish and animals, all of which play a vital part in maintaining environmental balance.
The Victorian Government is committed to protecting and restoring our rivers and catchments and safeguarding the regional economies that are dependent on them.
Through the Victorian River Health Strategy , the River Health Program has a clear vision for river health in Victoria.
