Our Water

Over the years, the water drought on Australia’s farmlands has become a huge problem that farmers and producers have to deal with. Australia is a natural dry land with common problems of inadequate rainfall and soil salinity. Despite that, Australia remains one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of crops and pastures domestically and abroad. Hence, there is a need of a large supply of water, whether from irrigation or from rainfall before it threatens the industry. But there has been a problem of overflowing water from farmlands that actually damage wetlands and lead to its extinction. That is why legislators are planning to implement farm water regulation Australia to control the problem.

The problem of irrigation salinity and overflowing water

As aforementioned, Australia is a natural dry land with inconsistent rainfall. However, over the years, the people have created solutions for this major problem. The farmers and producers have all relied on for irrigation from underground aquifers and river systems to create bountiful harvests among the farm crops and farm pastures. Given that Australia already have found solution to its major problem, these days that exact solution threatens the existence of the agricultural industry of Australia. Why so? This is because the people have created a problem called irrigation salinity. This problem already affected 2.4 million hectares of Australian farmland while threatening the other 5.7million hectares of productive farmlands. Experts say that by the next 30 to 50 years, the effect of the damage from salinity could increase six times. Irrigation salinity is caused by over excess of groundwater that leads to the dissolution of salts and depositing it in the water causing imbalance on the soil, making it too salty, and unfit for agriculture.

Not only that, too much irrigation also led to the destruction of Australia’s rare species and wetlands, specifically the Great Barrier Reef.

The solution

The legislators have proposed an act to regulate farm water supply not only to prevent irrigation salinity but also to protect Australia’s wildlife nature wonders. It is basically a land management practice that farmers have to observe.

The Queensland Government already announced it would release $50million to support the said regulation. The regulation aims to promote discipline among farmers for them to be able to not only produce world class farm products, but also be able to save Australia’s natural treasures.

The fund will assist farmers to implement the right practice and some will proceed to the monitoring of water quality to see if the regulation is really working.

The contradiction

Irrigation salinity control is highly expensive and the major farmers and producers do not approve of it. On top of that, management issues may not be the same on a certain farmland with the conditions of the others. Farmers have already raised the arguments that instead of having them follow this land management practice; the government should instead develop the science to identify the right type of fertilizer practice for every soil type.
